💡 Probability: The chance of rolling any specific number on a fair die is 1/n, where n is the number of sides.
Types of Dice
| Die Type | Sides | Common Use |
|---|---|---|
| D4 | 4 | D&D damage rolls, small random numbers |
| D6 | 6 | Most board games, Yahtzee, Monopoly |
| D8 | 8 | D&D weapon damage, RPGs |
| D10 | 10 | Percentile rolls, RPGs |
| D12 | 12 | D&D damage, less common RPGs |
| D20 | 20 | D&D attack rolls, saving throws |
| D100 | 100 | Percentile rolls, complex RPGs |
Dice Probability
For a fair die with n sides, each face has an equal probability of 1/n. When rolling multiple dice, probabilities combine:
- Rolling a 6 on a D6: 1/6 = 16.67%
- Rolling double 6s on 2D6: 1/36 = 2.78%
- Rolling at least one 6 on 2D6: 11/36 = 30.56%
- Rolling 7 on 2D6: 6/36 = 16.67% (most likely sum)
Dice in Games
- Monopoly: 2D6 determine movement.
- Yahtzee: 5D6 for various combinations.
- Dungeons & Dragons: Uses D4, D6, D8, D10, D12, and D20.
- Backgammon: 2D6 determine moves.
- Craps: 2D6 with specific winning/losing combinations.
History of Dice
Dice are one of the oldest gaming tools, with evidence of use dating back over 5,000 years. Ancient dice were made from bone, wood, stone, and ivory. The modern cube-shaped die with dots (pips) became standardized in the Middle Ages.
